We had an amazing Fall with Immigration Nation this year!
I started out visiting each of the participating schools before our first field experience. It was wonderful to meet everyone and to get you thinking about the uniqueness of America due to immigration.
Our first field experience was at Indian Rock Nature Preserve in Bristol.
Program's Theme: Collaborations between early European immigrants and Native Americans.
Students learned about the legend of the corn-husk doll and made their own, foods from the earth, weapons and farming learned from each other, and took a hayride while learning the stories of the Tunxis Indians.

During our second program experience, students went to the Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury to learn about Diversity in America due to Immigration!
Docents took the students through the history gallery's exhibit entitled Coming Home: Building Community in a Changing World. Students learned about Waterbury's rich history and how the community has transitioned over the years. For three centuries new families have come to the Waterbury region. Learn about them by touring our new history exhibit. Be transported into the worlds of colonial farmers (1680-1800), factory workers and industrial magnates (1800-1950), and citizens of our contemporary world (1950-today).
Students learned from Collective Conscientiousness Theatre's program entitled Stories of a New America where students took a look at how different local refugees felt for their first few months in their new homes.
CT Dance Theatre came to do a portion of their program called My Cultural Heritages Rock Ballet taking students on a journey through the evolution of music and dance because of various immigration groups coming to the United States. Students got the opportunity to dance the Virginia Reel, George Washington's personal favorite, all the way to the current dance of Hip Hop!

A group of Immigrants came to the program to sit on a panel where students were able to hear their stories and ask them questions about their experiences. It was amazing to see the variety of experiences, ages, and opportunities that these men and women shared with our students. The students did a fantastic job of asking some great questions!
Looking forward to seeing you after the new year at Connecticut's Old State House and the Wadsworth Atheneum in February/March to learn about Coney Island and the immigrant group that truly shaped it through art, architecture, and community, the forced immigration of slavery, and the story of the Amistad!
Have a great holiday season! :)
