In December and January, I did classroom visits in the 11 participating classes about how nineteenth century immigrants packed for their long journey to America.
In groups of 3-5 students, they did a simulation activity to learn about the experience of being an immigrant. Each group, as a family, had to make difficult decisions as they determined what was important to pack for their new life in America.
Students learned that immigrant families left behind most of their belongings, their pets, and sometimes even family members for their better life in America. Most immigrants during this time didn't have much money, so they weren't able to afford the cost of bringing many things with them, so they had to make the difficult choice of what would stay and what they were able to bring along.
I truly enjoyed my time in your classrooms! I look forward to our next distance learning experience on Tuesday, February 25th when we go to the Ridgefield Playhouse for a play entitled: Ellis Island: Gateway to a Dream.
Upcoming events:
April 2: Trip to Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty, NYC for all students
5/8: Immigration Celebration at EDUCATION CONNECTION in Litchfield
Colebrook Consolidated, North Canaan, Ms. O'Neill, Ms. Strohmeyer, Mrs. Rooney, & Ms. Babowicz
5/22: Immigration Celebration at EDUCATION CONNECTION in Litchfield (for Day B)
Johnson School, Ms. Guerrera, Ms. Duquette (LIS), & Ms. Damore-Jenks
